Hertfordshire - New build

New build blending together contemporary and traditional features

JDA recently submitted an application for this charming project in Hertfordshire. The proposal draws on an original scheme by the ‘concept architects’ Al-Jawad Pike. JDA joined the design team at the pre-planning stage as 'delivery architects' to revise the planning drawings as well as produce construction drawings.

The original scheme looked to retain and upgrade the existing traditional cottage, extending either side with a new contemporary extension. However, structural issues made this unfeasible. As a result, the existing building will be replaced, while maintaining the original design aesthetic, style, materials, and overall form.

A key design concept for the client was the blend of traditional and contemporary aesthetics. This is expressed through form, detailing and materiality with the chosen material palette including lime render, reclaimed slate roof tiles on the traditional cottage and hand-laid knapped flint walls on the modern extension.
