Kent - Contemporary New Build and Barn Renovation

Replacement dwelling & renovated barn with a modern twist on the local vernacular

Now fully constructed, this energy-efficient contemporary family home by JDA replaces a tired, cold and poorly designed dwelling within the Green Belt and AONB. The site’s gentle slope offers wonderful views across the paddock and surrounding Kent countryside.

The design comprises three linked buildings, traditional in form yet contemporary in detail, inspired by the agricultural barns characteristic of the area. Each block was carefully positioned, sized and oriented around existing trees to retain the site’s natural character.

Materials include ground-floor brickwork, feature timber-clad gables, clay roof tiles and dark grey aluminium-framed windows. The adjacent existing barn was also restored, incorporating contemporary touches such as feature glazing, creating a complementary pair with the new house.
